The Monochrome Series is the first portrait project that I photographed using studio lighting. I wanted to fund a bigger personal project of mine, Our Heroes, and so I started hosted sessions in my apartment. It consisted of one-hour photo sessions with both friends and perfect strangers. The project was shot in the kitchen of my Brooklyn apartment over the course of 12 days. I ended up with close to 70 people participating and used a single light to create darker, more dynamic images of people. While I coached people through various poses, I generally let people sit and move how they most felt comfortable, pulling out specific emotions along the way.
